Local Youth Council helps to spread the message to other students about the dangers and consequences of using alcohol and other drugs
The youth council has been a vital part of reaching youth in the Wiregrass community. The council is comprised of 8th-12th grade students from local city and county schools. These students help to spread the message to other students about the dangers and consequences of using alcohol and other drugs. They perform community service hours throughout the year and frequently speak at events on behalf of the partnership. A few examples of events that the youth participate in are Prom Promise and food drives. Prom Promise is a prom safety program emphasizing the need for sobriety through the use of a mock car crash involving youth council, police, ambulance, fire, coroner personnel and other groups. This past April and May, the council created five mock car crashes at area schools. Several times throughout the year, youth council members will bring in food for various organizations in the community in order to help fight hunger in the Wiregrass. They also do a local cable television show every month on various topics and puppet shows at elementary schools.
The youth council is currently getting ready for a big 2009-2010 school year. They have already decided to once again raise money for Salvation Army Christmas Angels, will soon start working on new skits and are trying to increase membership in the youth council from within their schools. Please contact the Program Manager Beth Ford at 334-699-2813 or bford@wiregrasspartnership.com for more information.
